Maid uniforms turn up in many films, from around the world. A French-style maid uniform with a long skirt, long sleeves and white apron, regularly turns up in Japanese films and anime. This style of uniform differs from the Western version. The western version found in American, UK and some European films is a bit more slutty. It often features a shorter skirt, is sleeveless or short sleeved and often low cut to show off cleavage. There are also leather and latex variants. There are many differences in styles, but as to why the Japanese version is so distinctive is unknown, at least to me.
