Kids Panic in Shanghai

I originally saw Shanghai Panic on Channel 4 back in the early 00s. I recorded it on VHS tape, unfortunately, the tape ran out before the end. I bought the DVD recently and have to say it's not as good as I remembered. It is still a unique film and well worth watching. The film can be compared to, Larry Clark's Kids. Both have a HIV theme, sex scenes/sexual discussions, drink and drug use and both feature young people. Shanghai Panic differentiates in that it is set and filmed in China and it lacks the gloss; it is a bit rawer. If you tuned in half way through Shanghai Panic you could mistake it for a documentary. The only time it slips from reality are the blurring camera effects to show the kids high on ephedrine. Unlike Kids, Shanghai Panic seems to have more of an emotional punch. Kids by comparison is a little cold; yes it's shocking and makes you feel uneasy, but it's not emotionally affecting. Kids is no doubt an important film, but is it a great film? I don't think it is, but it is a very good one. The same can be said for Shanghai Panic, it isn't a masterpiece, but it is a film I really like..still.

There's a much better review, than my mini one here
There's a trailer, but I don't think it does it justice:
